Cash Loses Ground in Spain: 83% of Spaniards Use Cards for Online Transactions
A New Era in Payments: More Technology, More Options, Less Friction
Madrid, August 7, 2025 – The 14th edition of the Nuek report on the digitalization and democratization of consumer payments, prepared in collaboration with Afi (International Financial Analysts), confirms a structural transformation in payment habits in Spain. The use of debit cards, both in physical and online environments, has consolidated as the main payment channel, also driven by the growing adoption of smart devices.
According to the report, 83% of Spanish consumers already make online payments with cards, and the use of technologies such as biometrics and tokenization is becoming the standard for security. One in three e-commerce transactions in Spain is currently tokenized, which has allowed fraud to be reduced by up to 60%.
The study also highlights the growth of solutions such as Bizum and the willingness of 60% of banked users to use a single digital identity for payments, identification, or accessing services. This evolution anticipates a new model in which identity, authentication, and transactions converge.
However, the report warns that significant frictions still persist. 48% of Spanish consumers have at some point experienced difficulties using their preferred payment method. Although this figure is lower than in other countries analyzed, it indicates that digital access does not always translate into a frictionless payment experience.
Nuek emphasizes that the challenge is not only continuing technological innovation but also redesigning an ecosystem that works for everyone. Interoperability, integration between platforms, and invisible experience remain pending challenges if the goal is to advance toward a truly inclusive and efficient environment.
This report sends a clear message: the digitalization of payments in Spain is underway, but its success will depend on making the experience universal, secure, and effortless.
